Emergency Information for Families

EMERGENCY PROTOCOLS

HOLD ALL CLASSES

  • Used when hallways, school grounds, or common areas need to remain clear to address medical or safety concerns.

  • Often used when a student or staff becomes ill or is injured.

  • Students remain in classrooms and instruction continues as usual.

SECURE PERIMETER

  • Used to secure the perimeter as a preventative measure when a threat or danger exists outside the school building.

  • Often used when an animal wanders onto campus.

  • Instruction continues; no one is allowed to enter or exit the building.

LOCKDOWN

  • Used to protect building occupants from dangers in the building or external threats that may enter the building.

  • Instruction ceases and school occupants follow protocol until the situation is resolved.

EVACUATION

  • Used when remaining in the building is unsafe, as in the event of fire, gas leak or water leak.

  • May be to an on-site or off-site location.

  • If evacuation off-site is necessary, strict reunification protocols will be followed.

SHELTER IN PLACE

  • Used when building occupants must remain in the school for extended periods of time.

  • Often used due to weather related events.

COMMUNICATION DURING AN EMERGENCY

Communication from the School:

  • The school will send automated emails, phone calls, and text messages via School Messenger as soon and as often as possible.

  • PLEASE DO NOT CALL the school in response to an automated message. Communication from Students:

  • During a lockdown, students will be instructed to silence phones.

  • If appropriate, students will be encouraged to communicate with parents/guardians via text.

  • Students will be asked not to share information via social media. Parent/Guardian Role:

  • Please wait for the school or your child to contact you.

  • Please do not call the school as this overloads our phone system and prevents us from making calls.

  • Please do not contact your child. A ringing phone could alert an intruder to students’ whereabouts.

RELEASE and REUNIFICATION

In the event of an evacuation, the reunification location will be communicated to parents as soon as possible.

To ensure a safe and efficient reunification process, please remember:

  • Students will be released to parents, guardians, or emergency contacts listed in school records.

  • All adults picking up students must show a valid photo ID and sign for students’ release.

  • Phone calls cannot substitute for authorization. This process is required for all students, PK-12. The process may seem very formal, but it is necessary that we account for every student to ensure the safety of everyone in our school community. Please keep this process in mind when updating your child(ren)’s Emergency Contact Information each year.
